Eleven Twenty Two Speakeasy in Paso Robles

Even though Paso Robles is a wine town, there are some great cocktail options including the speakeasy Eleven Twenty Two Cocktail Lounge, located behind the rear patio of Pappy McGregor’s Pub. Entrance is on Railroad Street, with a convenient alley next to Pappy’s being a convenient cut-through. This small classic cocktail bar doesn’t take reservations, so we joined the line hoping to get in.

There are no cell phones allowed to be used inside, and once you step through front door into a library style foyer they drop the phone into a bag that you keep with you. Next, you enter the space and are seated at the bar or one of the cozy booths. Inside there are many bottles of whiskey in all forms, with just a few other spirits, so this is a great option for bourbon and scotch fans. Music was jazzy including a number of tunes from Nouvelle Vague, a French group that does Bossa Nova versions of New Wave tunes.

There’s a non-alcoholic Orange Julius on the menu, available optionally with spirit added. We opted for the straight version and while it was reminiscent of the real thing it wasn’t nearly cold or sweet enough.

For our two cocktails we were both completely blown away at the flavors and complexity on display from very different formats. I had the Strawberry Coconut Daiquiri that exploded with flavor even from a tiny sip. Not too much strawberry or coconut, but just enough to elevate this perfectly balanced cocktail.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Mai Tai had the Clarified Grasshopper with vodka, menthe pastille, creme de cacao, Coco Puff cereal milk, and ringed with a Chocolate Dipped Rim. This too had so many layers and the chocolate rim provided a long finish as well. I’m not always a fan of clarified cocktails but this would get me to switch teams, it was just that good. Mrs. Mai Tai was inspired and drew a photo since we couldn’t take photos.

The service inside was serious but with the requisite wink and nod to provide the indication to the customer that they are supposed to be here for a good time. Eleven Twenty Two is a must visit if you’re in the area and a perfect nightcap if you’re in town for the Cane Tiki Room like we were.

Elevated Dining and Drinks at The Pressroom San Jose

Owned by the same restaurant group as Dr. Funk, The Pressroom is located around the corner from San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose and serves elevated California cuisine. The venue spans two buildings at the corner of Santa Clara and N. Almaden Ave, drawing inspiration as being the location for The Mercury News starting at turn of the 20th Century. A main bar is located in the portion of the restaurant adjacent to Almaden featuring greenery and large open windows. A separate dining space called the Editors Room is also available for private parties and the wood-lined Bar Mercury is a bar within a bar.

The bar team from Dr. Funk developed the cocktail menu featuring some newspaper-inspired riffs on classic cocktails. We absolutely loved the New York Sour riff called City Beat that takes inspiration from the Eastern Sour by adding orange oleo saccharum to the Whiskey Sour template and featuring a rich pinot noir float. The Byline Fizz also features wine with a delightful blend of strawberry-infused tequila, lemon, honey, and a sparkling wine float. We thought the cocktails were really great and priced in line with other downtown San Jose venues. All cocktails are half priced during Happy Hour, 3-5 pm weekdays.

We enjoyed our dinner early on Friday, featuring fresh and inspired ingredients. I loved the Thai Steak Salad including the fresh and toasted coconut, while Mrs. Mai Tai loved the Lemon Ricotta Agnolotti topped with parmesan cream. The menu has some vegan dishes, but leans into some beef and steak options – though we’d have liked to see more appetizers to choose from. The Pressroom is also open for lunch including sandwich options with their brunch featuring a fun tabloid-style menu. We did find the venue and music to be fairly loud and very bass-heavy even during a relatively slow portion of service.

The Pressroom is a great addition to downtown San Jose’s restaurant scene, combining visual and cultural nods to the past with a menu that propels diners into the future.

Alice in Wonderland Pop-Up at The Fat Pigeon Livermore

We’ve visited The Fat Pigeon during the holidays for the Miracle pop-up and decided to visit again for their spring-inspired Alice in Wonderland theme. The decor is nicely set up with some references to characters on the walls, though this is mostly based on the novel and not any movie franchises. Occasional smoke effects and bubbles were a plus to reinforce the theme. Music seems to be off theme, but nicely upbeat and jazzy during our Sunday afternoon visit.

There are a variety of themed cocktails with a diversity of spirits, though many of the items contain spicy/chili elements that I avoided. I would rate these cocktails as pretty good and found that they weren’t too boozy, so possibly a pro or a con. I enjoyed the Bandersnatch & Brandy, a fruity Manhattan riff that had rich mouthfeel. Mrs. Mai Tai seemed to like her cocktails including the King of Hearts with a smoke bubble and some nice orange flavors. There are also a couple of non-alcoholic options including the refreshing “tea-ki” inspired Golden Road to Nowhere that had a great presentation as well.

Our service was super prompt and the $25 grazing board with cheese, fruit, and meats was a pretty good value and a hit with our party.

Elevated Cocktails at Alter Ego in Downtown San Jose

Alter Ego is a dimly lit speakeasy style lounge with cocktails and small bites located inside Still O.G. on First Street in downtown San Jose. Reservations for two-hour seatings are essential later in the evenings, but we arrived promptly at opening and it didn’t really fill up until about 90 minutes later.

Cocktails at Alter Ego lean on classics, though there is a little bit of something for those who enjoy tropical cocktails or cane/agave spirits. I thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant flavors of the Easytiger served on crushed ice with “Amaro, Railla, Allspice, Almond, Lemon, and Tobacco Bitters.” I followed up with the Paper Plane riff called Dogfight that is made with Bourbon, Amaro, Aperitivo, Lemon Essence, and Orange Bitters and comes with a little paper airplane as a garnish.

Mrs. Mai Tai’s Annabel Lee features a smoke bubble and the Pisco Sour riff has Bolivian Brandy, Pommeau, Aperitivo, Smoked Pineapple, Chili, Tamarind, Egg White, and Lime – plus a stencil on top that reveals itself when the bubble bursts. Julie loves coffee drinks so the Kyushu Coffee was right up her alley and very rich, featuring Shochu, Coffee, Kuromitsu, Black Sesame, Heavy Cream, and Salt. You can see these look great and use a lot of really interesting ingredients. We saw several other cocktails with inventive garnishes and glassware.

Alter Ego also serves gastronomical small plates, quite well executed and featuring a symphony of flavors well beyond typical bar fare. I loved the rich Guinea Fowl with truffles and the Scallop dish with just the right amount of chili spices.

The elegant vibe inside Alter Ego is relaxing and dark, and there’s no sound bleed from Still O.G. on the other side of the curtain. Our cocktails were fantastic and the staff did a wonderful job preparing everything and being responsive for additional orders. Nice to see old friends Ken and Paul still doing the amazing cocktail thing at a different venue in downtown San Jose.

Tipsy Putt On the Green

The cocktail shows that this isn’t our usual haunt, but we had a great time doing the mid-week suburban drinks and golf thing in downtown Sunnyvale. Tipsy Putt has a nine-hole traditional mini golf setup, plus a nine-hole 1-2 Putt tabletop format. It’s all indoors and there is a large selection of beer and cocktails on tap, plus pretty good bar food too. There are several Tipsy Putt locations in Northern California and there are leagues and trivia events as well.

The On the Green cocktail seemed appropriate and it was nicely matching my ball, too. It contains Midori, of course, plus vodka and lemonade and turn out to be not too bad and certainly helped me get into the mood. Thanks to Michael and Holly for invite, Tipsy Putt was a lot of fun.

Witchy Good Time at The Cauldron 

We enjoyed the ambiance and cocktails at The Cauldron Spirits and Brews, a witch and black cat themed bar and restaurant located across the street from Knott’s Berry Farm. This was a perfect starter before our evening at Knott’s Scary Farm last Saturday, with many of the guests as elaborately dressed as the staff! Wearing black would be a smart choice.

The main room features ornate decor with a few special effects. Not too dark and spooky but plenty nice to get you in the mood. We were seated on the enclosed patio that has conservatory vibes and the music was dark leaning classic modern rock for the most part.

I enjoyed a pumpkin ale and others tried the cocktails with thematically appropriate names. Mrs Mai Tai enjoyed the Knotty Kid Martini that is a lemon drop riff featuring Boysenberry Cotton Candy. The cocktail even featured a ghostly apparition!

The Formosa Cafe Still Delivers Hollywood Charm

We made our second trip to this longtime Hollywood restaurant and had a grand time once again. The Formosa Cafe is noteworthy for fine Chinese food and cocktails, with an immersive interior and slick graphic design aesthetic. We were seated again in the old rail car – same booth as last time. It’s a fun space but the small table meant we had to do some table Tetris to fit things together.

We loved all the food we ordered, including the Orange Chicken and Chow Mein. The Shrimp and Pork Shu Mai from the happy hour menu were delightful, and we again enjoyed the Soup Dumplings. The portions are fairly large, so if you’re local you have the advantage for taking some home. There’s a bunch of glassware, mugs, and more available for purchase too.

Cocktails were once again a highlight, including a nice Mai Tai with light and dark rums and a hint of pineapple. The Cider House Punch has spiced rum and and a spiced apple syrup but was a bit spicy for me. Mrs. Mai Tai had the gin-based Secret Garden and the Cold Brew Martini and both were great, in fact this was her favorite Espresso Martini variant so far.

We found the service to be quite attentive and it is just so cool hanging out in an old but well-maintained restaurant with so much history. The decorative elements and lighting are very immersive and it’s a hoot to see the photos of Hollywood stars on the walls or to pass by the booth where they filmed L.A. Confidential.
